CHILDREN’S TAG CAMP 2000 IN CASTLETON

Mam Tor in the Peak District

The Peak District - Mam Tor

Sunday 6th  Today we all arrived in time to be shown where we were sleeping before we did Archery. I am sharing a room with Amanda. Our room is quite nice and looks onto the gamesroom.

TAG Childrens' Camp - Archery

'We are staying at a place called the Hollowford Centre and catering for ourselves.'

TAG Childrens' Camp - Archery

After we had settled in a bit we went and did Archery, which was at the Centre so we didn’t have to go anywhere on the minibuses.

The Archery was great and I got most of my arrows on the target. When we had eaten our evening meal we went for a walk round the village, which was good but tiring.

TAG Childrens' Camp - Sailing

TAG Childrens' Camp - SailingMonday 7th We went sailing all day today at a place called Rother Valley. I watched them for two sessions and then some of us did orienteering. When I went orienteering I seemed to spend a lot of time going backwards and forwards.

'Today was also Daniel’s birthday so he got chucked in at least once.'

TAG Childrens' Camp - SailingThis evening we did a trail round the village using pictures and trying to find out where they had been taken from. We had to do this in two groups, the groups were all the boys against all the girls. We didn’t find out who won though.
TAG Childrens' Camp - Rock ClimbingTuesday 8th   Today we went rockclimbing all day. I really enjoyed doing it and it was the quickest climb I had ever done.

After a while it started to rain quite hard and then it went torrential. So they got some sort of covers out for us. But Amanda was sitting on the grass infront of a rock when it was raining, so she stopped the rainwater from going any further and made a puddle around herself.

We had our lunch sitting at the top when everyone was up there, then we went back down by abseiling.

We went back to the centre early today so that we could get ready to go bowling, the bowling was great fun.

When we had finished the game of bowling we went to a place called Bitz and Pizza for meal, I had Lasagne and it was very good. I think I came second to last in the bowling.

TAG Childrens' Camp - Water SportsWednesday 9th  We were split into two groups the boys and the girls for today as there were two activities. The activities were caving and canoeing. The boys did canoeing while we were caving, then we swapped over at lunchtime.

Caving was brilliant, but I didn’t go as far as the others. When we got to a reasonably wide bit we stopped and turned off the lights on our helmets. It was at this point I turned and started going back. On the way back we met a couple of others from the group that needed lifting down the cave.

When it was time for lunch we went to a carpark close by where we met the others and then went to a place called Tod Brook, which was where we went canoeing. I watched the rest of the group canoe, as I don’t enjoy water sports. It was still fun though. When we got back to the centre those that had wet things went to the drying room. We then had some time to ourselves to relax and chat before we went outside for the BBQ, which was really good. We had chicken drummers, burgers, hot dogs and jacket potatoes, followed by baked bananas with chocolate and marshmallows.

'We had room inspection tonight, which was done by Mick, Mike and Vinney.
It was really funny.'

Tonight I stayed up along with Gina, Daniel and the rest of the staff. I finally went to bed at 2:10am!! It was a good laugh though.

Mam Tor - often shrouded in mist!Thursday 10th  Well it’s the last day today and we are going abseiling for the morning. We will be abseiling down a 65 foot viaduct. So in actual fact we will only be going down bricks for half of it as the rest of it is sort of free fall.

We are doing this as one group as it is the only activity left. When we got to the bridge we were all kitted up with harnesses and helmets, which were very uncomfy. I went down once and the worst bit was going over the top and leaning back. Some of the others went down twice.

We then had to go back to the centre for 2 pm, as that was when we were being picked up.

'The end of the camp was quite sad as we were saying good bye.
